Mwalimu Gustavio Abwang was born in 1926 and passed on to be with the Lord in 1993 (67 years old). 'Mwalimu' is Swahili language word (the common language in East Africa) meaning 'Teacher' in English language. Gustavio trained as a primary school teacher, where he rose in the ranks from classroom teacher to the headteacher position. He honourably retired from Uganda's education service while heading Abakuli Primary School, in Bata sub-county, Dokolo district, Uganda. Previously, he headed several schools such as Angwecibange Primary School in Dokolo town, Adwir Primary School in Omoro sub-county, Alebtong district, and Anwangi Primary School in Kwera sub-county, Dokolo district.
This is foundation is a reflection and continuation of his legacy, love, and dedication to family and societal education. Through Mwalimu Abwang, formal education expanded within his family and the clan (an important societal unit of relatives in East Africa), as parents brought their children to his home to learn, get educational discipline instil in them and inspire the child to love education. As a teacher, this role of inspiring, and supporting the child to love and acquire formal education, at the time was not limited to only biological children and relatives. Through Mwalimu Abwang, several children in the community were supported to obtained formal education. Some of them lived in his household, while he supported others through school fees and other scholastic materials.
MAFF therefore aspires to build upon this foundation to continuously support individuals and families beyond just education but into all important aspects of societal livelihoods.
